*Holistic Health - refers to a philosophy of health care that views physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of life as closely interconnected and equally important as approaches to treatment. It is not itself a method of treatment, but instead an approach to how treatment should be applied. Traditional drug oriented medical philosophy treats physical symptoms, using standardized methods such as the prescription of drugs or the undertaking of surgery, while the patient is only passively involved. On the other hand, Practices emphasizing holistic health believe that they are treating the whole person. Practitioners of holistic medicine believe that attitudes affect the present condition, and the patient may play an active role in the healing process. We involve our patients and teach them too! It is also increasingly used in mainstream medical practice as part of a broad view of patient care. This philosophy of health care is frequently associated with alternative medicine,
Definition of Holistic
- Incorporating the concept of Holism in theory or practice.
- Perceiving with the principles of holism in a system of therapeutics, esp. one considered outside the mainstream of drug oriented medicine, as naturopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy, herbology acupuncture and usually involving nutritional measures.
History of Holism
Holism has existed for ages outside of the academic circles, however, the medical establishment, have only recently begun to integrate it into the mainstream health care system. (They still want to use drugs - Many of which are toxic to the liver)
Holistic health is a concept that all potential contributing factors which may affect a person's well-being, are taken into consideration when assessing a person's overall health.
Holistic health in traditional medical practice upholds that all aspects of people's needs, physical, social, and mental, should be taken into account and seen as a whole. As defined above, the holistic view on treatment is widely accepted in medicine.
In alternative medicine, it is believed that the spiritual aspect should also be taken into account when assessing a person's overall well-being.[3]The spiritual aspect is not associated with any religious ideology but rather, refers to the essence or "core self" of a person
